Features

Built for every scientist who intuitively knew there had to be a better way

Lab Owl™ is a flexible and fully integrated bioreactor control system for cell culture and fermentation applications. Available in a variety of form factors, Lab Owl features an easy-to-use interface that has been leveraged in applications ranging from benchtop bioreactors in development labs through pilot plants and manufacturing. With Lab Owl™, you will benefit from:

EASE OF CONFIGURATION

A few simple steps and your Lab Owl™ system is ready to go:

  1. Set up your equipment: Lab Owl™ accommodates the physical configuration of your bioreactor. Simply fill in a few blanks to describe the gas associated with each mass flow controller and its destination – sparger or overlay. Equipment setups can be saved for use on future experiments or to make it easy to configure multiple bioreactors. With Lab Owl™, you can also easily configure the capabilities of your variable speed pump motors for operation in ml/min rather than worrying about pump speed.
  2. Set up your experiment: Here is where the real flexibility and power of Lab Owl™ begins to shine. For each pump, choose from a number of service options, including Base, Acid, and nutrient feed.
  3. Calibrate: Lab Owl’s intuitive wizards walk you through pH and DO calibration.

Now you are ready to run – easy as 1, 2, 3.

FLEXIBLE CONTROL

Not only can you simply define control methodologies for each loop, Lab Owl™ also allows you to trigger specific control functionality based on time or an event to allow for unattended operations such as set-point changes, feeds, etc. These event- and time-based “recipes” can help ensure consistent operations – improving the quality, repeatability, and robustness of your runs.

Lab Owl™ also includes advanced Dissolved Oxygen control where all control devices can be sub-loops to the DO loop, with the additional ability to run multiple sub-loops simultaneously.

Material can be charged by flow rate or by weight using the optional scale interface. With the scale interface, the feed bottles can be put on the scale (charging by loss in weight) or the vessel can be put on the scale (charging by gain in weight).

DATA COLLECTION AND REPORTING

Lab Owl™ not only records data from your bioreactors, it captures data output from all integrated analytical instruments. Collection of all your data makes it easier and faster to identify experiment run errors and issues, and to make necessary adjustments.

We know that your goal is to identify those runs that are the most repeatable and robust, and produce just the right yield or desired outcome. Lab Owl™ helps you see more, quickly and accurately, so you can pinpoint what’s working well and do more of it.

With Lab Owl™, you can easily generate reports from Lab Owl’s historian (in Lab Owl’s standard format, Excel, or custom formats) and merge it with data from your other lab equipment. Sound incredible? We think so, too.

ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENT INTEGRATION

Lab Owl™’s strength to integrate all of your analytical instruments paves the way for many benefits in the lab. Not only does it ease data collection from all your instruments, super-charging your reporting, it helps scientists trigger process adjustments, spot errors, and save time by reducing the need for human transcription and data entry. Reducing simple errors translates into saved experiments and less waste of resources.

Cell counters, metabolite analyzers, and more…imagine if all of your analytical instruments were integrated and shared data, we did. Lab Owl™ brings it all into focus.

REMOTE ACCESS

Lab Owl™ is the first bioreactor control system to offer this level of secure remote access. How many times have you wished you could monitor, correct, fine tune, or adjust an experiment run without having to physically return to the lab? We’ve heard you. Lab Owl™ provides remote access whether you’re in another building on your organization’s campus, at home, or in transit. Wherever you are, you’ve got access to Lab Owl™, and Lab Owl’s watching your lab. We know that providing you with remote access can make the difference between the success and failure of an experiment run, potentially saving you significant time and resources.

Versatile Alarming

With Lab Owl™, you can easily configure the alarm limits for all process variables. Alarm and event notification is available locally, at the station, as well as remotely via email, text message, and more.

MODULAR AND ADAPTABLE

No two labs are alike. Lab Owl™ is available in benchtop, tabletop, and wall-mount configurations to accommodate your specific laboratory environment or workspace. One station can serve as the interface for multiple units, if desired.

Scalable Technology

Lab Owl™ accommodates a wide range of control devices and instrumentation of various sizes – making it an ideal solution for development and manufacturing environments. Control schemes – and recipes that have been built in development – are easily utilized in manufacturing units.

Easily expanded and extended

When you need more, Lab Owl™ expands to meet your needs. We’ve built Lab Owl™ with industry standard components, making it easy to maintain, extend, and scale.

It’s all in the box

Lab Owl™ is fully integrated including controller, HMI, probes, cables, pumps, motors, and more. Simply select the monitoring and controlling options that fit your needs, including, but by no means limited to, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), pH, air, temperature, and agitation.
